PPDS LED display brightens façade of German state theatre

A 6 x 2m Philips Urban LED 7000 Series wall with 3.9mm pixel pitch has been installed on the Saarländisches Staatstheater in Saarbrücken, southwest Germany

A 12sqm Philips Urban LED 7000 Series display has been installed on the exterior of the Saarländisches Staatstheater in Saarbrücken, replacing a paper-based promotional system at the historic venue.

The Saarländisches Staatstheater, opened in 1938, hosts around 30 productions and some 700 events annually, spanning opera, drama, ballet, comedy, concerts and film. Previously, promotional banners and posters were produced, printed and changed manually by staff. The new 6 x 2m LED wall, mounted on the front of the listed building, is designed to allow the theatre’s marketing team to manage and update content centrally without external support.

The display carries a 3.9mm pixel pitch and the company says it delivers high contrast ratios and refresh rates suitable for both static imagery and video content. Its ambient light-adjusted brightness is designed to maintain visibility across varying outdoor conditions, and the unit holds IP66 certification for dust, water and salt spray resistance.

Installation on the listed building required a bespoke self-supporting substructure, mounted using a mobile crane, that could be fixed to the theatre’s façade without causing damage. The full installation was completed within ten days by local AV and event technology specialists DooH Concept and LE-Eventtechnik GbR, with metalwork framework from Metallbau Patric Schmidt.

Konstantin Flabouriaris, sales director for the DACH region at PPDS, said: “Installing the display on a listed building presented several challenges. A key requirement was designing a self-supporting substructure that could be securely mounted to the theatre’s façade without causing any damage. The substructure was installed using a mobile crane on day one, with the LED wall fully completed by day ten, just in time for the theatre’s new season the following day.”

Prof. Michael Schulz, general artistic director of the Saarländisches Staatstheater, added: “The new digital daily advertising board from Philips enables us to make the wide-ranging programme of the Saarländisches Staatstheater even more visible, reaching out directly to visitors. There has been a significant increase in theatre attendance since installing our new LED wall.”
