INFiLED brings Willy Wonka’s world to life across Asia

136 AR Series panels form 7.5 x 6m main LED wall for touring production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory visiting venues in Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei, Singapore, Hong Kong, Manila and Seoul

INFiLED’s AR Series LED panels are providing the visual backbone of the Asia touring production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

The installation comprises 136 AR Series panels forming a 7.5 x 6m main LED back wall and two automated tracking sliders, each measuring 2.5 x 6m. The system is driven by Brompton Technology Tessera SX40 processors and Tessera XD data distribution units. The AR Series panels feature a 2.9mm pixel pitch, lightweight cabinet design and can be curved up to 10 degrees, with front and rear access for maintenance – attributes considered essential for a touring production playing constantly changing venues across Asia.

The production marks a significant upgrade from earlier iterations, which relied on projection mapping and 9mm pitch LED walls. The finer pixel pitch allows for smooth gradients, soft fades and detailed textures, while a low-reflective surface preserves deep blacks, enabling panels to recede visually when narrative focus shifts to performers.

Jeff Sugg, video and projections designer, said: “As a video designer, my primary concerns with LED wall products are big depth for colour rendering, viewing angle, weight, fades and gradients, and adaptable installation. The panels also have to be non-reflective for this production to accentuate black levels and to disappear on a dark stage.”

Drew Cipollone, production stage manager and resident director at production company Broadway Asia, added: “The INFiLED AR2.9 achieves this balance, fulfilling both the artistic vision and the operational demands of this international tour. They act as a storyteller themselves, allowing the stage to expand, contract and morph in real time.”

The touring system was delivered by Stage Sound Services of Cardiff, with system design by Mogzi.
