Genelec’s Smart IP loudspeaker system has been installed across GRIP Action Sports Hub in Tampere, Finland, a new six-floor centre for sport, exercise and relaxation that includes an Olympic-standard SkatePark, a 15m climbing centre, a gym, group training spaces, a restaurant and sauna. AV integration company 4Business Oy was tasked with delivering consistent, intelligible sound across the venue’s varied and challenging acoustic environments, including hard surfaces and uneven walls.
Working with the Genelec team during the design stage, 4Business specified a total of 57 Smart IP loudspeakers and six compact 4000 Series active installation loudspeakers throughout the building. The Smart IP models were selected for their ability to deliver power, audio and control over a single network cable, simplifying installation by reducing the cabling needed around ramps, climbing structures and other physical obstacles.
Thirteen Smart IP 4430 loudspeakers were installed across the SkatePark’s Street, Park, Jump Track and Vert areas, mounted on walls and concrete columns, with nine ultra-compact 4410 models providing background music in supporting spaces such as the shop and changing rooms. The Climbing Centre features seven 4430 loudspeakers directed towards climbers on the angled walls, alongside two 4410 units in the changing rooms; all loudspeakers in these areas use Genelec’s RAW finish with uncoated recycled aluminium cabinets to suit the building’s industrial aesthetic.
Elsewhere, eight 4420 loudspeakers serve the gym, with 4040 and 4030 models from the 4000 Series covering the group exercise and spinning studios. The sixth-floor meeting and function facilities include eight 4420 loudspeakers and two 4030 units, while a further eight Smart IP loudspeakers cover the lobby and circulation areas across all six floors.
Kimmo Lauttajärvi, sales manager at 4Business Oy, said: “The scale and architectural variety of the building could easily have made the system complicated to install and operate. Smart IP technology helped simplify both the physical installation and its ongoing management, with the flexibility to adjust each space as needed, while the 4000 Series provided a compact and detailed audio solution for smaller zones.”
