An HK Audio column array and subwoofer system has been installed at Munjeong Fun Station, an outdoor public plaza developed by the Seoul Metropolitan Government outside Munjeong subway station in Seoul, South Korea.
Engineered and integrated by South Korean specialist Sama Sound, the installation is configured to host civic events, video screenings and live broadcast relays from Seoul Arena, an indoor performance arena scheduled for completion in 2027. The project required high sound pressure levels and controlled directivity to prevent acoustic spill into neighbouring office towers and pedestrian thoroughfares.
The primary system comprises 12 HK Audio SI Series column loudspeakers positioned at four structural points around the plaza perimeter. Each position combines two SI P10i and one SI P10j enclosure, delivering IP66-rated weather protection alongside vertical beam control, paired with eight HK Audio S210 V subwoofers ground-positioned to supply low-frequency concert reinforcement.
To cover recessed zones beneath the plaza canopy out of reach of the main columns, Sama Sound deployed four HK Audio VORTIS 2 VR2-11510 point-source enclosures finished with polyurethane weather-resistant coatings. Signal amplification is driven by Powersoft Quattrocanali multichannel amplifiers, managed via a Q-SYS Core audio DSP platform integrated with the plaza’s large-format LED display.
To secure the column arrays to irregular wall profiles without compromising acoustic aiming angles, Sama Sound developed bespoke steel mounting brackets adapted from HK Audio hardware to anchor the enclosures.
John Ju, senior research engineer in Sama Sound’s system design team, said: “Munjeong Fun Station was a challenging project that required us to deliver the rich, powerful sound expected from a concert venue while maintaining harmony with the surrounding environment. The HK Audio SI Series delivered outstanding output and sound quality that exceeded expectations for its compact design.”
