CODA Audio speakers installed at Manchester club

Audio setup at the 250-capacity Night & Day – which has hosted famous bands like Arctic Monkeys, Elbow and Manic Street Preachers – has been replaced by a flown rig with a distributed HOPS (High Output Point Source)-based design

CODA Audio’s HOPS (High Output Point Source) loudspeakers have been installed at Night & Day in Manchester, following a system upgrade led by Liverpool-based audio specialist Adlib. The independent venue, run by Jennifer Oldenburg and Ben Smithson, has hosted acts including Ed Sheeran, Arctic Monkeys, Elbow and the Manic Street Preachers early in their careers, and stages up to five shows a week.

The previous system hung below the proscenium, creating both a visual obstruction and a physical hazard for the audience. Adlib designed a distributed system using four CODA Audio HOPS10i-Pro units deployed in two phases above the proscenium, ahead of the stage. Two HOPS8i units are positioned behind the mix position as rear delays, with a further two HOPS8i units used as side stage fills, while three CODA Audio U4 dual-18in subwoofers line the front of the stage. Stage monitoring is provided by four CODA Audio CUE TWO monitors, with the system powered by eight CODA Audio LINUS6.4i DSP amplifiers.

Roger Kirby, project manager at Adlib, said: “The old system hung below the proscenium and was not only a visual obstruction but also a physical one whereby punters were at risk of banging their heads on it. We were mindful of not having hanging loudspeakers, so we designed a distributed system based on four CODA Audio HOPS10i-Pro deployed in two phases. The HOPS boxes have amazing power-handling for their size, so this allowed them to be installed above the proscenium, ahead of the stage, and not visually impair performances.” The subwoofers and flown loudspeakers are mounted on isolators to prevent structure-borne sound bleeding into the building’s fabric.

Ben Smithson, who runs Night & Day, added: “Because of the intimacy of the venue, the audience experience has been massively elevated by the new CODA Audio system. Adlib came in and delivered in buckets. We were super impressed with them at every stage, including all their work prior to the installation to model the venue and ensure full coverage in the areas we wanted.”
