Christie brings laser focus to Chinese flying dome

Single 50,000-lumen Griffyn 4K50-RGB pure laser projector has replaced a multi-unit system at the Flying By Changbai Mountain immersive attraction in Jilin Province, China

Christie’s Griffyn 4K50-RGB pure laser projector has been deployed at the Flying By Changbai Mountain flying dome attraction at Changbai Mountain Legend International Resort in Jilin Province, China, replacing a previous multi-projector setup with a single high-performance unit.

Delivered by integrator Wincomn Technology, the attraction, located at the base of Changbai Mountain’s northern scenic area, takes guests on an aerial journey through the mountain’s changing seasons from the perspective of a Manchu mythical sea eagle – sweeping across forests, snow-covered peaks and the iconic Tianchi Lake. A suspended motion cabin with dynamic seating accommodates up to 70 guests per session, moving through six degrees of freedom, with wind and mist effects adding to the sense of immersion across the 20m dome screen.

Christie says the Griffyn 4K50-RGB was selected for its combination of 50,000 lumens brightness, native 4K resolution and omnidirectional operation – the last of these being a critical requirement for dome installations where projector orientation can vary significantly. Support for frame rates up to 120Hz at 4K in 3D environments is designed to ensure smooth motion and visual continuity throughout the flying sequences.

The shift to a single-projector configuration simplified both system design and installation, reducing costs while maintaining the visual quality the attraction demands, according to Christie. Built-in warping and blending capabilities supported efficient setup across the curved dome surface, while the projector’s colour alignment tools helped deliver consistent image quality across the full projection area.

Tony Chen, general manager at Wincomn Technology, said: “With the Griffyn 4K50-RGB, we succeeded in meeting these requirements using a single projector – a remarkable achievement considering that multiple units were previously necessary. This simplified system design and installation reduced overall costs for the client, and delivered the immersive visual performance the experience demands.”

Gene Wang, senior director of pro AV sales for China at Christie, added: “We are pleased to work with Wincomn Technology on this immersive attraction, combining their expertise in dome-based experiences with Christie’s projection solutions. Together, we helped the resort realise its creative vision while simplifying the overall system and delivering a compelling experience for visitors.”

The installation is the latest example of large-format single-projector deployments replacing more complex multi-unit systems in immersive attraction environments, where installation efficiency and long-term reliability are increasingly significant factors in technology selection alongside raw visual performance.
