Christie lights up Kia’s immersive tunnel installation in Ecuador

GS Series laser projectors installed in 27sqm spiral tunnel, part of larger 1,400sqm exhibition space at car manufacturer's new Experience Centre for Sustainable Mobility, in Quito

Christie has deployed nine GS Series 1DLP laser projectors with Ultra Short Throw lenses to power an immersive helical tunnel installation at the car manufacturer Kia’s new Experience Centre for Sustainable Mobility, in Quito, Ecuador.

The setup is designed to project interactive, high‑realism visuals onto curved walls and the floor, and respond to visitor movements.

The spiral tunnel covers roughly 27sqm and forms part of a larger 1,400sqm exhibition space. Three projectors provide coverage for the floor, and six more project onto the curved walls.

Content is generated in Unreal Engine, a suite of real-time 3D development tools created in 1998 for video games, but now used across various industries. Meanwhile, LIDAR sensors detect motion to trigger effects such as pulsating jellyfish, startled fish or blooming flowers.

Christie says the projectors deliver 6,750 ISO lumens and WUXGA resolution, and that their RealBlack technology yields a contrast ratio of 4,000,000:1, helping ensure deep blacks and multi‑projector blending.

Skyluft, an Ecuadorian company specialising in interactive technology solutions, was instrumental in designing the centre. Roberto Mendizábal, CEO, said: “The DWU630‑GS models are low maintenance, maintain uniform brightness over time, and with the new UST lenses, we were able to tackle the challenge of projecting in a complex space with multiple radii.”

He added: “The spiral shape and the need for precise warping with nine projectors made this a one‑of‑a‑kind challenge in the region. Christie’s RealBlack technology greatly helped with the blending and was key to achieving flawless results. The projectors are spectacular, and we also selected Christie One Mount ceiling mounts to simplify projector alignment ‒ it was absolutely the right choice and made the process much easier.”

The exhibition is permanent and forms part of Kia’s strategy to combine innovation with sustainability.
