Barco brings laser projection to Austin film festival

Belgian manufacturer's technology is being used at two venues for South by Southwest (SXSW), the annual film, music and technology festival held in Austin, Texas, which is celebrating its 40th edition this year

Barcohas brought its laser projection technology to South by Southwest (SXSW), the annual film, music and technology festival running March 12-18 in Austin, Texas. For the first time, screenings at the Paramount Theatre and Alamo South Lamar are being presented using Laser by Barco.

Films screening in the format included the festival’s opening night feature, I Love Boosters, directed by Boots Riley and starring Keke Palmer, LaKeith Stanfield, Naomi Ackie and Demi Moore, which premiered at the Paramount on March 12. Further titles include Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, and Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice.

Gerwin Damberg, executive vice president of Barco Cinema, said the partnership gives filmmakers a stronger platform for their work. “We’re excited to partner with the festival to bring Laser by Barco to these iconic Austin venues, giving filmmakers a powerful canvas to present their work with exceptional brightness, colour, and clarity,” he said.

Gabe Van Amburgh, senior manager of film and TV programming at SXSW, added that the collaboration ensured filmmakers’ work could be seen at the quality it deserved. “Bringing their laser projection to the Paramount and Alamo Drafthouse ensures our filmmakers’ work can be experienced with the level of quality it deserves,” he said.
