Brompton Technology processing and AUO LED panels form the LED volume at Digi-Cast HANEDA STUDIO in Tokyo, a virtual production facility run by Crescent, Inc. The studio combines the LED volume with Crescent’s own motion capture, volumetric video and photogrammetry technologies.
AUO supplied the panels for every surface. The 41.5m-wide by 10m-high main wall uses next-generation panels newly developed by AUO, with a 1.95mm pixel pitch and brightness of 2,000 nits. Two movable 6m by 6m side walls use AUO P3.9 panels, and an LED ceiling of about 23.5m by 15m uses AUO P5.2 panels. The ceiling is divided into nine individually height-adjustable sections, so it can be configured for different productions.
The LED environment is driven by 27 Brompton Tessera SX40 4K LED processors and 57 Tessera XD 10G data distribution units. Crescent uses Tessera’s API-based control to build workflows around its own production needs, alongside colour-management options including LiveGrade integration and 3D LUT application.
The LED stage is part of Crescent’s “Link-All” approach, which brings its imaging technologies together in one facility, with the studio spaces designed to work together in real time. Productions can use an end-to-end workflow covering previs and techvis, scene and asset creation, and the final shoot. The development has an LED Stage building and a Production building. Crescent’s original plans also included dedicated volumetric video, photogrammetry and motion capture spaces, plus audio recording and pre-visualisation facilities. The studio opened moved into full-scale operation this year, and has television drama series and streaming video projects planned.
Kota Kikuya, technical director at Crescent, said: “When we were designing Digi-Cast HANEDA STUDIO, we needed an LED processing platform with a proven track record and the flexibility to adapt to the way we want to work. Brompton’s Tessera platform is well established across the industry, but equally important for us is its API-based control, which allows us to build workflows around our own production needs. The colour-management options, including LiveGrade integration and 3D LUT application, give our team the flexibility required across a wide range of productions.”
Elijah Ebo, director of APAC operations at Brompton Technology, added: “With one of the world’s largest LED volumes at its heart, Digi-Cast HANEDA STUDIO is a hugely impressive facility, both in its scale and in the flexibility it offers production teams. We’re delighted that Crescent has chosen Tessera SX40 and Tessera XD for such an ambitious project, and it is particularly exciting to see the team using Tessera’s API control and advanced colour-management capabilities to tailor the system around its own production requirements.”
