Barco confirms five Universal films for HDR cinema format

Lightsteering technology, which redistributes light to produce highlights over six times brighter than traditional projection, will be used across a slate running from May to November 2026

Barco has confirmed five upcoming films from Universal Pictures and Focus Features for release in HDR by Barco, the company’s premium cinema format, with the announcement made at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Based on Barco’s patented Lightsteering technology, the format is designed to strategically redistribute light on screen via a Series 4 LS4K laser projector, producing highlights the company says are over six times brighter than traditional projection while retaining detail in darker areas. The result, Barco says, is greater depth, clarity and range alongside a wide colour gamut with high-contrast images.

The confirmed lineup spans the remainder of 2026, opening with Focus Features’ psychological thriller Obsession on May 15, followed by Spielberg’s sci-fi event film Disclosure Day on June 12. Animation studio Illumination’s Minions & Monsters arrives July 1, with DreamWorks Animation’s Forgotten Island following on September 25. Universal’s Focker-in-Law, which reunites Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro alongside Ariana Grande in a new chapter of the Meet the Parents franchise, closes the slate on November 25.

The format is currently expanding across Europe, with installations planned at select Cineplex locations and Cinedom Cologne in Germany from November.
