Avantis Education introduces two new VR/AR headsets

Company has designed Xcelerate for high school and further education students, and Xplorer for primary and secondary education schools

Avantis Education, creator of virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) solutions designed exclusively for education, has launched two new headsets – Xcelerate and Xplorer.

The company says Xcelerate is the first ClassVR headset made specifically for high school and further education. Designed to maximise student comfort, Xcelerate delivers six-degrees-of-freedom head and controller tracking plus a 90° flip visor that supports transitions between immersive learning and real-world collaboration.

The four-camera spatial tracking system is designed to allow for greater precision and provides a boundary safety system to prevent students from colliding with real-world objects.

Gillian Rhodes, chief marketing officer, Avantis Education, said: “Everything about Xcelerate has been designed with education in mind – like all our ClassVR solutions. That means putting the student front and centre with ergonomics and experience, and ensuring it’s a plug-and-play technology that teachers feel confident to deploy and manage in the classroom.”

Meanwhile, Xplorer delivers a headset for K-12, covering the full spectrum of primary and secondary education. It boasts a new 4K Ultra-HD display, upgraded LCD screen, and enhanced audio.

Both headsets are powered by Snapdragon XR Platforms from Qualcomm Technologies.

Sahil Bansal, senior director, product management at Qualcomm Technologies, added: “Our collaboration with Avantis Education is helping redefine what’s possible in immersive learning. With our Snapdragon processors at the heart of Xcelerate and Xplorer, the new headsets power richer VR/AR content than ever before.”

Xcelerate and Xplorer are available to schools globally through a network of approved partners. Avantis Education has also introduced a monthly subscription for schools in the UK and US. Xcelerate is supplied in sets of four, while Xplorer is available in sets of eight or 30.
