Leyard LED anchors heritage space for English miners

A 4.8m ultra-wide video wall forms centrepiece of the new 'Interpretation Space' exhibition area at the historic Redhills Durham Miners' Hall in North East England

Leyard Europe has supplied an LED video wall for the Interpretation Space at Redhills Durham Miners’ Hall in North East England – a purpose-built room designed to immerse visitors in the history of the Durham mining communities – as part of a major renovation of the historic landmark completed in June 2025.

The installation centres on a Leyard VDS Complete DHD196 LED video wall configured in an 8-wide by 4-high panel arrangement, measuring 4.8m by 1.35m and running at 3840 by 1080 resolution with a 1.2mm pixel pitch. The display’s ultra-wide 32:9 format is designed to draw visitors into content exploring the history of mining and the communities of the region, supported by a surround sound system integrated into the space.

The Interpretation Space has been designed to evoke the environment of a working colliery, with dim lighting, structural pit props and textured coal-face wall surfaces. The room is also built for dual use, with full integration into the main hall’s AV infrastructure allowing it to shift between heritage experience, presentations and commercial hire.

Matt Cruse, sales consultant at Electrosonic, said: “The Leyard LED display technology was the ideal choice for a venue of this kind, delivering the visual impact and flexibility needed for an immersive heritage experience, while integrating discreetly into a building of such historical importance.”

Founded in 1915, Redhills has been reimagined as a hub for a solidarity economy supporting local people and skills, while offering tours connecting visitors with its history as a centre of workers’ rights in the region.
