Extron tech supports new university esports facility

A former campus computer store at the University of Tennessee at Martin has been redeveloped as an esports facility featuring Extron technology, supporting gaming, streaming and future competitive activities

The University of Tennessee at Martin (UT Martin) has created a new esports facility featuring AV technology from Extron to support gaming, streaming and future competitive esports activities.

Developed within a former campus computer store, the facility is designed to provide a flexible and cost-effective environment for gaming and content creation while making use of an existing university space.

At the centre of the installation is an Extron DTP CrossPoint 108 4K presentation matrix switcher, which routes content from gaming PCs, consoles and streaming systems to displays throughout the room. An Extron TLP Pro 1220TG TouchLink Pro touchpanel provides system control, while a DTP2 R 211 receiver handles signal extension and audio de-embedding.

According to the university, the room has initially been developed to support an esports club, with ambitions to establish a competitive esports programme in the future.

“This room is just the beginning,” said Jace Williams, AV system administrator at the university. “We are starting with an esports club with hopes to someday soon grow it into an esports team. The interest is already here and it’s an exciting time to be a part of this growing program.”

The installation has also been designed with future expansion in mind. An Extron MGP 641 xi multi-window processor is planned for integration as the facility develops, providing additional flexibility for content display and streaming workflows.

The project reflects the continuing growth of esports within higher education, with universities increasingly investing in dedicated facilities to support student engagement, recruitment and competitive gaming programmes.
