Extron AVoIP system deployed across Dutch University classrooms

NAV Pro AV over IP platform installed in three collaborative learning spaces at Radboud University in Nijmegen, with second phase covering five further rooms already planned

Extron’s NAV Pro AV over IP platform has been deployed across three instructional spaces at Radboud University in Nijmegen as part of a significant AV upgrade led by Dutch integrator Fidato, replacing systems that were approximately seven years old.

The project was driven by the need for greater flexibility and scalability across the university’s learning spaces, with students increasingly working in collaborative clusters requiring seamless source switching between workgroups and instructor stations. Each classroom now operates on a localised AV subnet using NETGEAR AV Line switches, with AV content transmitted via NAV E 121 1G encoders delivering HDMI signals over the IP network to NAV SD 101 1G scaling decoders at displays throughout each space.

Each student cluster is equipped with an NBP 100 Network Button Panel for localised control over display power, input selection and volume, with instructors able to override cluster settings via Extron TLP Pro 1025T 10in tabletop touchpanels. System control is handled by the IPCP Pro 255Q xi quad-core control processor, which provides isolated control of local AV devices via a dedicated AV LAN port and dual Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. A NAVigator System Manager, expanded with a LinkLicense, manages signal routing and endpoint configuration across the three rooms.

Tonnie Toonen, team leader of audiovisual services at Radboud University, said: “We have been using Extron for a very long time and are happy with the quality and reliability. NAV offers an easy-to-use platform which we are able to control and monitor ourselves. After taking the rooms into use we have seen that they are frequently used and perceived as easy to operate by the teachers.”

Erik te Vaanhold, AV project manager at Fidato, added: “We chose Extron NAV AV over IP due to reliability, easy installation and Extron support. Unlike competitive alternatives, NAV doesn’t require any annual subscriptions, which is also a major benefit.”

Encouraged by the initial deployment, Radboud has scheduled a second phase to upgrade five additional classrooms with near-identical systems.
