Control4 platform unifies 5,200sqft smart home in US

California residence equipped with dual-mode media room featuring Screen Innovations, Samsung, Focal and Lutron hardware, with whole-home audio and integrated security, all orchestrated via Control4, an exclusive brand owned by distributor ADI

Control4’s automation platform is at the heart of a full smart home overhaul at a 5,200sqft residence in Newport Coast, California. The project – which began as a straightforward home theatre upgrade – expanded into a whole-home installation encompassing entertainment, lighting, audio and security. Fellow ADI-owned brands WattBox and Triad also feature in the installation.

The centrepiece is a redesigned media room engineered to switch between two distinct viewing environments. A 150in Screen Innovations motorised projection screen retracts into the ceiling to reveal an 85in Samsung The Frame television mounted behind it, while Lutron Triathlon motorised shades and automated lighting adjust simultaneously. A Control4 CORE3 controller manages the sequencing, with Focal in-wall speakers, JL Audio subwoofers and Triad amplification delivering the audio. The transformation, the company says, is triggered by a single command via a Control4 Halo remote or T4 touchscreen.

Whole-home audio was distributed using Sonance Invisible Series in-wall and in-ceiling speakers, designed to deliver sound throughout the residence without visible hardware. Outdoor areas were extended with Episode ES-500 outdoor speakers. A second Samsung The Frame display was installed in the family room, creating what is described as a second flexible entertainment space.

Lighting was overhauled with Control4 dimmers and keypads replacing older components, enabling customised scenes across the home. Security systems were upgraded with a Control4 DS2 video door station, Yale smart locks, a Qolsys alarm system and Luma surveillance cameras – all integrated within the Control4 ecosystem. Supporting infrastructure includes WattBox IP power management and a Ubiquiti Wi-Fi network.

Steve Stary, general manager and co-founder of Daisy Orange County, said: “The client came to us with a very specific idea of what they wanted to create – a home theatre. But as they worked through the discovery process with our design team, they developed a much broader understanding of how their entire home’s environment could be enhanced through properly curated technology.”

Mario Najar, project manager at Daisy Orange County, added: “One of the homeowner’s priorities was protecting the clean lines and visual simplicity of the interior design. The invisible speakers the client selected let us deliver high-quality audio throughout the home while keeping the technology completely hidden.”

Eric Fritz, senior director of product management at ADI, added: “Projects like this demonstrate how integrators can combine multiple technologies into a unified experience for the homeowner. Through ADI’s portfolio of smart home, security and AV solutions, integrators have access to a broad ecosystem of interoperable products that allow them to design sophisticated environments.”
