Control4 system revamps London’s historic Arding & Hobbs building

Architecturally grand former department store now features building-wide automation platform, integrating audio, video and conferencing technologies to support co-working, events and hospitality

Control4 has played a central role in the redevelopment of London’s historic Arding & Hobbs building – a large and architecturally grand former department store – with the automation platform used to integrate audio, video and control systems throughout the multi-use site.

The building has been converted into a workspace, leisure and community hub, with technology design and installation delivered by SCCI and integrated on a Control4 CORE 5 controller. The system is designed to provide simple operation, flexibility and a discreet footprint suited to the building’s restored interiors.

Commercial hospitality operator x+why required a solution that would support everything from co-working and video conferencing to hospitality and private events. SCCI deployed Control4 to unify control of displays, audio systems, conferencing tools and mode changes across several flexible spaces, including the Club Room, the Silk Room and a large events venue for up to 500 attendees.

The Club Room features an L-Acoustics loudspeaker system comprising X6i loudspeakers, SYVA Infra and SUB10i subwoofers, driven by LA4X and LA2Xi amplified controllers. The space can be rapidly reconfigured, with Control4 enabling users to switch between business-led daytime settings and more entertainment-focused evening modes. Two rear seating “nooks” feature Sony Bravia 50in Pro Displays with Apple TV, also brought under Control4 control.

Richard Reid, business development director at SCCI, said: “From the initial brief, we envisioned the Club Room as a place for informal business lunches. In reality, it’s also become very popular for parties, watching sports, and other group activities. It’s a multi-functional destination for members, and Control4 helps us shift the technology quickly and efficiently so it can adapt to these different room uses, while the quality of the AV experience is exceptional.”

A dedicated events space equipped with a bespoke 16:9 drop-down screen and an 8,500-lumen Epson 3LCD projector is also integrated into the automation platform. Audio is provided by Episode and Triad loudspeakers and subwoofers, powered by a Yamaha multi-channel amplifier, with all control routed through a Control4 Halo remote.

In the Silk Room, SCCI installed a large display and conferencing tools to support private meetings, with the space also adaptable for social events using Apple TV and distributed audio. Background music across shared areas is provided by Episode Commercial Series loudspeakers, designed to improve comfort and reduce ambient noise in workspaces and corridors. SCCI also delivered a building-wide Wi-Fi network using Araknis Networks equipment.

Phil Nevin, co-founder at x+why, added: “SCCI’s AV installation is about creating great experiences for our members. With SCCI’s expertise and support from Control4 and other ADI brands, we have a system that enhances enjoyment, well-being, and connection, rather than just delivering the important technical features that we require. The discretion the system offers within the interior of the building is also a huge part of its appeal. It gives us everything that we asked for, and so much more.”
