The University of California, Riverside (UCR) has fitted a large 49-display videowall using Peerless-AV mounts in the UCR Student Recreation Center. The 80,000sqft facility offers a variety of activities and club sports with the videowall added as a way of showcasing school events, news and stream live sports.
A request for quotation was sent out and High-Tech Electric came back with a solution consisting of 49 Barco 55in LCD displays in a 7 x 7 configuration. The displays form a 28.5ft videowall, which is hung using Peerless-AV’s DS-VW755S Full Service Thin Video Wall Mount with Quick Release. The videowall includes a variety of tuners from Contemporary Research to stream 16 channels and content from a Panasonic Blu-ray player.
The installation of the solution proved challenging as the components had to be assembled and prepared far away from the videowall, using remote power supplies, due to the space designated to house equipment. The spatial constraints also meant the power supplies and media players needed to be rack-mounted separate from the displays in a temperature-controlled room with low voltage cables running to the displays.
Additionally, an Extron touchpanel was added in the control room to adjust screen configurations, for example from one full screen to four smaller screens showing different content.
The videowall starts at 13ft off the ground, with a peak height of 40ft, and the Peerless DS-VW755S mount specified includes a reusable display-dedicated wall plate allowing the installers to align the displays and make adjustments at eight points. The mount also includes a quick release function so installers can gain easy access to the back of displays. A feature said to only be available with the DS-VW755S is its ability to extend into a negative tilt position for ease of cabling.
“This project consisted of so many industry firsts – it was scary to make it all happen, but that’s what you have to do to get the latest and greatest,” said James Gulke of High-Tech Electric, who led the project.
