Sony launches new ultrafine LED display technology

Sony has unveiled crystal LED integrated structure (CLEDIS) display technology, a new large-scale canvas solution that expands Sony’s self-emitting display capabilities with ultrafine LEDs as the light source.

The solution is said to deliver a totally new visual experience not possible with even the highest-end conventional LED array currently available.

“Our new technology is a giant new type of canvas for unprecedented flexibility and creativity in high-end visual simulation and entertainment,” said Damien Weissenburger, business head of corporate and education solutions, Sony Professional Solutions Europe. “Compared to other solutions currently available for large-scale display it’s a leap forward in depth, contrast, wide viewing angle, colour, resolution – and pure visual impact.”

The new canvas technology is designed for a range of commercial applications where intricately detailed video displays and realistic simulation is required on a large scale. Applications range from industrial product design and manufacturing for automotive, through to displays in theme parks, museums, high-traffic lobbies and showrooms.

CLEDIS is a scalable system with a borderless design that allows multiple tiles to be aligned so no visible gaps can be seen by the naked eye.

The CLEDIS self-emitting display technology uses R (red), G (green), and B (blue) ultrafine LEDs mounted on the display surface, with each pixel emitting light independently. Each pixel is composed of one separate R, G and B ultrafine LED, with the light source only 0.003sqmm in size. The remaining surface area is more than 99% black.

Combined with the technology’s isotropic luminescence, which provides the same colour reproduction and brightness for viewers at any angle, the high black-to-surface ratio delivers a high contrast ratio in both light and dark viewing environments. The surface-mounted light source also improves the efficiency of light used.

The display is able to achieve a viewing angle of nearly 180°, with corner-to-corner image uniformity in terms of brightness and colour, even on a large screen. It has a brightness of 1,000 nits, producing imagery with 10-bit colour depth and a wide colour gamut, approximately 140% of sRGB.

The solution also features Sony’s pixel drive circuitry, to achieve fast video response with a frame rate of up to 120fps. This is critical for sports, concerts, or training simulations, where users need to present large screen visuals with no delay or motion artefacts.

The scalable canvas is made up of multiple 403mm x 453mm display units that can be joined together to create a large-screen display with a size and aspect ratio based on each application’s requirements.

The CLEDIS display solution will be shown for the first time in public at InfoComm 2016 (booth: C7708) in an 8K x 2K, 9.7m x 2.7m configuration, and is planned to be available in Europe in Q1 2017.
