Ocean Outdoor UK has launched Ocean Portal, a freestanding half-cube LED display format designed to transform high-footfall indoor environments into walk-in experiential spaces.
Developed by Ocean Studio and Ocean Labs, the Portal measures 4.5m wide by 3m high and is composed of five high-definition LED screens – three interior, including a floor screen, and two on the exterior. The system uses a 2.6mm pixel pitch with glue-on-board technology which, the company says, produces less heat, reduces reflections and improves protection against dust and moisture. A high refresh rate makes the setup suited to on-camera shoots and virtual productions.
The Portal is powered by Unreal Engine and Unity, using hardware from the gaming and film industries. Ocean Labs technology integrated into the unit includes real-time motion tracking and mixed reality, alongside Ocean Studio’s 3D DeepScreen capability. LiDAR technology and structured light cameras allow audiences to interact with on-screen content in real time, with integrated sensors tracking both individual gestures and group responses. Interaction data is available for brand analysis, and on-screen content can be extended to social media as part of wider campaigns.
The structure is modular and freestanding, and is designed to be assembled and dismantled quickly across a range of indoor locations. It can be configured as a maximum two-sided square of 4.5m per side, or in rectangular shapes up to 2.5m by 6.5m. The Portal is engineered to support heavy loads – including vehicles and full-scale models – allowing brands to combine live product demonstrations with digital effects within the same space.
Nick Shaw, CEO of Ocean Outdoor UK, said: “Ocean Portal redefines DOOH as we know it. It’s a cornerstone of our evolving innovation programme to design and develop big experiential environments that serve as programmable stages. Rather than asking audiences to stop and look, the Portal invites them to step inside, becoming active participants. For brands, it’s a flexible, fully mobile experience zone which integrates premium screen inventory, physical space and real-time virtual production into a single, hybrid offering.”
The Portal launched at Battersea Power Station this week with an entertainment showcase produced by Ocean Studio, including an interactive game in which players jump between melting ice blocks. Screens were built and supplied by LED Studio. The unit weighs 5.7 tonnes on site.
Brands and agencies can book the Portal as an exclusive custom installation or as part of a touring concept in which multiple advertisers share scheduled time slots at a single location. Target venues include retail destinations, festivals, transport hubs and stadiums. The format is also available in the German market.
The Portal follows Ocean Showcase, a freestanding outdoor DOOH format unveiled last year, which debuted at Westfield Stratford City in London.
