Funktion-One drives multi-stage audio at Red Bull Stockholm event

Four-point Vero VX system delivered transitions between three U-shaped performance stages at Banankompaniet warehouse, supporting a rotating back-to-back DJ format

Funktion-One’s Vero VX system has been deployed by Benum Sweden, the Scandinavian audio distributor, for Red Bull’s Back2Beyond event at the Banankompaniet warehouse in Stockholm, delivering audio transitions across a rotating multi-stage format.

The event, curated by Swedish DJ and producer Axel Boman, featured a series of back-to-back sets across three stages arranged in a U-shape, with artists including DJ Tennis, Jimi Jules and Jennifer Loveless. The format required sound to move continuously between performance areas without interruption, presenting a significant system design challenge for production company NaNaNa Produktion.

Benum’s Douglas Poppelman designed a four-point Vero VX system that gave each stage its own perceived left-right configuration. Funktion-One live sound engineer Will Wright supported the project on-site throughout set-up and delivery. Through careful alignment and panning between stacks during transitions, the audio team achieved a continuous sonic handover that followed the movement of the artists.

The central stages each comprised two ground-stacked arrays of three Vero VX enclosures above six F124 subwoofers, with flown clusters of three Vero VX and ground-stacked F221 subwoofers in the outer positions. Outer stages were equipped with Evolution X and BR218 monitor systems, while the central stage used Evolution 2 with BR115 subwoofers. The foyer ran Red Bull’s own Evolution 6 and F121 system to maintain sonic consistency with the main space.

Mats Mattson, product manager at Benum, said: “The choice of Vero VX for this application came down to the need for a high-tier system to cover a big audience area with a relatively small footprint due to sightlines, without compromising on sonic quality.”

Mattson added: “The transitions between stages were absolutely seamless. Everything looked so clean and the sound was amazing – very crisp, without distortion. It was an effortless feeling with lots of ‘air’ and headroom and, as is typical with Funktion-One systems, it didn’t hurt your ears even at high SPL.”
