Edinburgh Airport has undergone a significant digital transformation with the rollout of AV technology from Absen, Datapath, and BrightSign, in a project delivered by local systems integrator NuVideo. The upgrade centres on large-scale LED displays, video wall processing, and digital signage players – designed to improve passenger experience through real-time information, wayfinding, and immersive visual environments.
One of the most visually impactful additions is a floor-to-ceiling curved LED wall in the airport’s duty-free area. This serves both commercial advertising and essential wayfinding functions, and was built using Absen’s KLCOB Micro LED panels with a 1.8mm pixel pitch. The KLCOB features a black surface and flip-chip technology, designed to optimise colour vibrancy and durability, particularly in high-traffic areas like this one.
The airport’s check-in area also received a substantial upgrade. An existing LED wall was extended by 24m with the addition of 164 Absen A27 cabinets, creating a 106m-long display, which NuVideo and Absen say is currently the largest LED check-in screen in Europe. The A27 series also incorporates energy-efficient features that support the airport’s sustainability goals.
To power and manage the growing network of visual content, NuVideo integrated Datapath’s VSN V3 video wall controllers, paired with WallControl 10/PRO software and VisionSC-HD4+ and VisionSC-UHD2 capture cards. These systems were specified to support continuous 24/7 operation, enabling staff to control and schedule dynamic content across multiple endpoints. According to Datapath, the VSN units were configured specifically for the project and supported throughout by their engineering and training teams from initial system design through to on-site commissioning.
Digital signage playback is handled by BrightSign’s XT-series media players, with eight XT1144 and four XT244 units deployed across the installation. Running on BrightSignOS, the players deliver real-time updates, manage dynamic content such as advertising, and support wayfinding and flight information screens.
Michael MacNeil, sales manager at NuVideo, said: “Being part of Edinburgh Airport’s modernisation project was a fantastic opportunity for NuVideo to showcase our integrated AV expertise in a high-impact environment. Working alongside all the partners, we were able to deliver a seamless and visually stunning solution that not only met the airport’s operational needs but also elevated the passenger experience.”
