Women “deeply underrepresented” in pro AV says AVIXA

'Pro AV: Are Women Fully Welcome?' report reveals that women are not as represented in pro AV as they are in other industries and that the glass ceiling is "alive and well", with no AV job category having a lower percentage of women than senior leadership.

According to a report released this week by AVIXA, ‘Pro AV: Are Women Fully Welcome?’ women are “deeply underrepresented” in pro AV. The organisation’s global salary survey, compiled by AVIXA economic analyst Peter Hansen and ‘Joe’ Lloyd, AVIXA’s senior director of communications, reveals that women represent just 9% of the respondent pool overall (6% outside the US and 11% within).

“All the representation data adds up to one inescapable conclusion: Women are not as represented in pro AV as they are in other industries,” says AVIXA’s report on the survey’s findings.

And when it comes to advancement in pro AV, the glass ceiling is “alive and well”, says AVIXA, with no AV job category having a lower percentage of women than senior leadership. “Women are deeply underrepresented in our industry – especially at the top,” concludes the report.

The survey’s findings are disappointing, especially in light of Installation‘s current article quizzing some of this year’s Pro AV Watch List female inductees on the representation of women in AV. The findings were largely positive, with Alesia Hendley, business development representative at Audinate applauding “a lot of women in AV”. However, although Lainie Mataras, consultant, architect, design director at Planar, talks of the barriers to women in middle management “definitely improving”, she cautions that “we still have a way to go”. Nearly half of this year’s Pro AV Watch List inductees are women.
