Legrand UK & Ireland, a supplier of electrical and digital building infrastructure products, has reached a sustainability milestone, with an average of 34 percent of its UK-manufactured cable management products now incorporating Green Steel. This type of steel is produced in an electric arc furnace powered by renewable energy, a process designed to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 70 percent compared with traditional blast furnace methods.
The electricity used in the Green Steel sourced by Legrand is independently verified as being from sustainable sources via a Guarantee of Origin certification. By combining renewable energy with a minimum scrap content of 75 percent, the process is said to reduce emissions from 2.38 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per tonne of finished cold rolled steel to as little as 799kg CO2 equivalent.
Legrand has been gradually increasing the proportion of Green Steel in its cable management products since 2024 as part of efforts to reduce its Scope 3 supply chain emissions. The company also holds the EcoVadis Platinum medal, placing it in the top 1 percent of organisations assessed by the sustainability ratings provider.
Pascal Stutz, CEO at Legrand UK & Ireland, said: “While many businesses are still getting to grips with the challenge of reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions, we are making significant progress in reducing our Scope 3 emissions, with those reductions passing on to our customers.”
Additional sustainability measures at Legrand UK & Ireland include solar panel installations at its Consett and Cramlington sites and sourcing wider electricity supplies from renewable sources.
