InstallAwards: Holovis creates immersive experience for Schindler

The company is up for both Best Project and Star Product in the Corporate/Industrial category. Winners will be revealed on 12 June.

Holovis took the art of company demonstrations to a completely new level of immersive experience creating for Schindler a memorable and compelling way to communicate their vision of the future around design and innovation to their global customers. This new dome facility in the company’s Zurich HQ provides a spectacular finale for customer visits. Schindler wanted a truly transformative sensory experience inside an 11 metre geodesic dome, surrounded by 360 degree visuals and surround sound. Holovis was given a set of demanding constraints working within a empty space to create something that will capture their imagination of customers and partners.

Schindler required a virtual reality environment to enable the visualisation and realisation of Schindler’s vision for the future of city design. They also required a strong emotional connection for users, so headsets or glasses were out of scope

The Holovis design consisted of a flying (suspended) 15 degree dome with 360 degree projection using six PDF35 projectors for specially developed content. Schindler people were trained to use proprietary auto alignment technology to achieve perfect edge blends every show.

An audio solution was developed utilisng MC2 amps arranged in a custom channel layout but hidden from sight, placed between the lines of the dome’s exterior structure. Holovis is the first company to use this approach, ensuring everyone is receiving the same audio experience wherever they are sitting.

A key element of the installation provided by Holovis is the setup of the dome for non-technical, single person operation. All elements are integrated with a Crestron control system which gives the team one platform to operate any aspect of the showroom and dome, from lighting to audio including playing times of the theatre shows. Planned maintenance including perfect alignment is fully controlled by Schindler personnel. This makes for low running costs around a future proofed solution.

Motion seats and the integration of real time content is already planned to take the storytelling in the Schindler dome to the next level.

“We are honoured to be nominated for such a prestigious award in this inaugural celebration,” enthused Stuart Hetherington, CEO at Holovis. “The last year has been phenomenal for Holovis, we have delivered some incredible projects such as the Schindler dome, won high end contracts to deliver attractions in China and have taken our highest value order. It is great to see the unique immersive experiences that we design being used to transform sensory expectations in an array of diverse sectors, as demonstrated though our entry with Schindler. Here the dome is used to take the visual presentation of a message to the next level in a business environment, re-engaging and inspiring the audience. As a company this is the first award we have ever nominated ourselves for so have everything crossed for a great result.”
