LCI Productions delivers water projection spectacular for Doctor Who 60th anniversary

Content projected onto a 30m water screen, installed in Roath Basin, with two Panasonic projectors delivering the visuals and content running from a Madmapper media server. Show running 23-26 November

LCI Productions is helping to deliver Daleks, the Tardis and dazzling projections to celebrate Doctor Who Day (Thursday 23 November) and the 60th anniversary of the iconic sci-fi series. The company worked with BBC Wales to deliver a nighttime water-based projection spectacular across four days at the Roath Basin in Cardiff Bay.

The five-minute show premiers tonight (23 November), with an official switch-on hosted by Steffan Powell, presenter of Doctor Who: Unleashed. The show will then run every 30 minutes from 530pm until 930pm GMT until Sunday 26 November.

With a narrative created by former Doctor Who script editor Gary Russell, the content was produced by the BBC, with LCI productions giving guidance on how to optimise the content for use on the water screen to get the best for the show. The content is projected onto a 30m water screen, installed in the Basin, with two Panasonic projectors delivering the visuals and content running from a Madmapper media server.

The AV spectacle features highlights from the last 60 years of IP, including The Doctor, companions and foes of the Time Lord, plus an exclusive shot featuring upcoming fifteenth Doctor Ncuti Gatwa. Doctor Who is the longest running sci-fi TV show, first airing on BBC television on 23 November 1963.

“A watershow in Cardiff Bay is the perfect way to celebrate 60 years of this iconic sci-fi series,” said Rob Paul, design director from LCI Productions. “All the characters that people know and love are projected larger than life as 3D holograms floating in the middle of the lake. The show is sure to both surprise and enchant audiences of all ages, with the accompanying audio score fully immersing guests in the experience.”
