ISE People: Steven Rissi, Technical Project Manager, CEDIA

Steven Rissi is the Technical Project Manager for CEDIA in the US and is responsible for facilitating a wide variety of training including hands-on Boot Camps and workshops, as well as developing and updating courseware, and managing projects such as the EXPO Learning Labs and Future Technology Pavilion. At ISE 2013, Steven will be presenting three sessions in the Education Zone, as well as overseeing the CEDIA EST2 Certification Exam on the eve of the show.

As in 2012, the Education Zone is the centrepiece of industry training at ISE 2013. Powered by joint co-owners CEDIA and InfoComm International, there will be over 50 different training opportunities during the three days of ISE, with association members benefitting from reduced pricing and all delegates being able to take advantage of on-site certification as well as learning.

Steven will get the programme underway with the CEDIA EST2 Certification Exam, which will run the day before the show on Monday 28 January (10.00 – 15.00). Designed for people who wish to become CEDIA EST2 certified, the first section of the class is a revision session to help candidates prepare for the exam. The exam itself will be available in English, French, Spanish or Italian and candidates have 3 hours in which to complete it.

On Tuesday 29 January, Steven will deliver a session on ‘Introduction to User Interfaces’, looking at what a user interface is and what type will fit a clients’ needs the best. “Participants will find answers to these questions and more while participating in this introductory course,” comments Steven. “We’ll discuss remotes, keypads, and touch-screens and the pros and cons of each, as well as what characteristics make user interfaces effective and easy to use. Additionally, such topics as subsystem control, home automation, and systems integration will be touched on.

The all-important client interview will be discussed and participants will be schooled on recognising the essential criteria for engaging a trained electronic systems professional.”

The following day, Wednesday 30 January, Steven will present ‘Residential Security Fundamentals’ providing education on the fundamental concepts and components of residential security systems, describing their purpose, function, and design. The topics covered in this course include zones, wiring configurations, and communication options. Participants also receive instruction on various types of security devices such as magnetic sensors, glassbreak detectors, passive infrared motion detectors (PIRs), and the types of wire and cabling commonly used.

On the last day of the show, Thursday 31 January, Steven will co-present an ‘Introduction to Audio, Video and Home Cinema’ alongside Geoff Meads, also from CEDIA. “This session contains the most important technical information for those considering audio, video and home cinema as a business opportunity,” Steven says. “Topics covered include music streaming, design and install practices for high fidelity, the basics of home cinema and tips on how to avoid the rookie mistakes. If you’re in a related industry and have heard the buzz about home entertainment then this course presents the ideal opportunity to get involved and understand the technology available.”

Steven began his career in the Residential Electronics industry as a custom installation technician and has extensive experience working on and managing both retrofit and custom integration projects. In addition to his experience as a technician, Steven has held positions as a sales team and design supervisor and custom retail store manager.

With over 10 years of accumulated industry experience, Steven has acquired knowledge in a wide range of residential low voltage applications including audio/acoustics, video, networking, media distribution, automation, security, central vacuum, telephone/paging systems, and general residential infrastructure. Steven also holds multiple industry certifications including: CEDIA ESTII and Networking Specialist, ISF Level II, HAA Level II, Crestron DMCE, and CompTia Network+.
