Glamox, one of the world’s leading lighting companies, has been awarded a Red Dot: Best of the Best in the ‘Red Dot Award: Product Design 2023’, for its new Luxo Adapt freestanding LED office luminaire. The Best of the Best label is the highest distinction in the prestigious Red Dot Award. This award-winning luminaire comes from Luxo, the same Glamox brand that gave the world the famous Luxo L-1 desk lamp, which was designed by Jac Jacobsen in 1937, and has become a design icon and the inspiration for Pixar’s animated desk lamp.
“Our main goal was to design an elegant luminaire that would satisfy different desk arrangements,” said Hans Bleken Rud, the industrial designer responsible for Luxo. “Adapt at Glamox. We followed Bauhaus principles where form follows function and a Scandinavian design tradition that combines intuitive functionality with subtle aesthetics, clean lines, and a slim profile with edge-lit LED panels. The end result is a sleek, freestanding office luminaire with fewer lamps and wires, and which adapts to the user, not the other way around.”
Working on the design with Hans Bleken Rud was Andreas Murray, industrial designer, from Permafrost, the award-winning design studio in Oslo.
The new Luxo Adapt range has a minimalist profile and is designed with flexibility in mind. The luminaires are available in black, grey, and white, and offer different options for controls, sensors, and adjustable or fixed colour temperatures. A control panel on the pole allows independent control of the downlight and up-light. Adapt’s up-light illuminates the ceiling, which then reflects back on the surrounding areas below. This reduces the need for dedicated ceiling lights, while still fulfilling EU requirements.
