Nottinghamshire County Council’s lighting scheme features a range of Concord luminaires in the main concourse and across other public areas.
Built by Kier Construction at a cost of £11m, the new Mansfield Bus Station serves as an integrated public transport interchange for the whole Mansfield area. Designed by Nottinghamshire County Council’s Property and Environment in-house engineering and design teams, the lighting scheme features a range of Concord luminaires in the main concourse and across other public areas.
Mansfield Bus Station serves over five million people a year and was built as part of package of improvements designed to deliver swifter, greener travel in Nottinghamshire. The covered main terminal building integrates neatly with the nearby railway station via its adjoining footbridge. The bus station has a light and airy airport-style concourse and offers a range of amenities including a café, shop, toilets, a travel information centre as well as electronic information displays and a video wall. The abundance of internal open space internally is enhanced by large areas of floor-to-ceiling glazing and daylight controlled lighting.
The architectural steel columns around the perimeter – varying in heights of up to 8 metres, and intended to resemble the trees of the nearby Sherwood Forest – are lit by Simes SLOT up/downlighters from Concord. Each trunk is topped with a splay of six tubular steel branches of differing lengths and angles to support the ‘floating’ roof which curves and undulates in three directions. During night-time operating hours, these branches are illuminated by the Simes SLOT luminaires to provide a real ‘wow’ factor. Other Concord luminaires installed on the project include BRIO oval wall lights to illuminate the staircases and circulation areas, track-mounted Torus in the main concourse and LED 100TE downlights in the toilet cubicles.
David Fairfield, electrical engineer at Nottinghamshire County Council worked on the lighting design for the project: “The lighting scheme for a large public facility such as Mansfield Bus Station will, by its very nature, require a wide range of luminaires to meet the differing illumination challenges of the public areas. Concord supplied products from a variety of their luminaire ranges that were able to effectively meet these challenges.”
Simes SLOT is a stylish up/downlighter which allows the amount of up and down light to be independently specified, and therefore respective light output to be customised for each individual application. Concord Brio IP65 is a robust oval wall mounted ambient fitting that offers high performance to allow wider spacing along corridors and other circulation areas.
Installed to illuminate public works of art displayed in the station concourse, the Concord Torus downlights are a classic track-mounted spotlight offering flexibility and performance in a compact form factor. The toilet cubicles feature the Concord LED100-TE; a low profile downlight that is ideal for installation in all types of public area including reception areas, corridors and wash rooms.
