Gefen: Extending DVI using HDBaseT

New extension solutions to provide options for those working with digital equipment using the DVI format are being showcased by Gefen, joining the company’s growing selection of extension solutions for digital audio/video formats.

The DVI ELR over One Cat5 is claimed to provide a cost-effective solution for an ELR extension of DVI using HDBaseT. It supports resolutions up to 1920 x 1200 and extends DVI up to 150m using one Cat5 cable, an extension of 50m over previous solutions. A low power consumption mode helps preserve power when not in active use.

The DVI Extender with Galvanic Isolator sends DVI video up to 40m with one Cat6a cable or up to 30m with one Cat5e cable. Video resolutions are supported up to 1920 x 1200. Gefen includes galvanic isolation for sensitive installation environments such as in medical or healthcare-related fields and provides up to 5kV of isolation between the source and connected downstream equipment. Without galvanic isolation, Gefen says, the physical connection between the two could increase the risk of electric shock or potentially cause system damage.

This new technology was developed to enable the use of copper cables instead of fibre optic cables, the company notes, in applications where electrical isolation is a must and the signal extension range is short. It is designed to provide integrators with an alternative to use more economical cabling in an installation that would previously have required fibre optic cables.
