The hidden cost of late-stage audio decisions

Phil Bowman, head of installations at Mason's Sound, a UK audio systems installer, argues that leaving sound out of early design conversations leads to costly workarounds and compromised performance

We often see audio treated as something that can be resolved once the walls are finished, the furniture is installed, and the technology budget is clearer. That may appear efficient, but it frequently creates avoidable costs, design compromises and systems that fail to support how the space is actually used.

In our experience, audio performance is shaped by decisions made throughout the design and construction process, including room geometry, surface finishes, ceiling layouts, cable routes and the location of power and data infrastructure. By the time we become involved, many of those decisions may already be fixed.

Retrofitting audio into a completed space rarely means simply adding loudspeakers and an amplifier. We may need to reopen ceilings, reroute cabling, relocate fittings or work around design features that occupy the most suitable loudspeaker positions. These changes increase labour costs and can disrupt other trades. They may also force compromises that would not have been necessary if audio had been considered earlier.

TECHNICAL MALFUNCTIONS
A loudspeaker placed where space remains available is not necessarily positioned where it will perform best. Microphones installed after the room layout has been finalised may struggle with reflections, poor pickup or inconsistent coverage. The result can be a technically functional system that still produces weak intelligibility or uneven sound.

We can use digital signal processing to correct many issues, but it cannot overcome every architectural limitation. Hard surfaces, extensive glazing and open ceilings can create reverberation that makes speech difficult to understand. Poor loudspeaker placement can leave some areas too loud and others too quiet. Flexible layouts can also alter how sound behaves within the room.

When these issues are identified late, the response is often to add more equipment. Extra loudspeakers, amplification and processing may help, but they can increase costs without addressing the underlying cause.

Earlier collaboration between audio specialists, architects, consultants and fit-out teams can prevent this. Small changes, such as adjusting surface finishes, allowing suitable loudspeaker positions or planning cable routes in advance, can produce better results than adding technology later.

PEOPLE FOCUSED
Another hidden cost we regularly encounter is a system designed around the room rather than the people using it. A meeting space may need to support hybrid discussions, presentations and flexible layouts. A hospitality venue may require different sound levels across several zones. An education space may need consistent speech coverage from every seat.

These requirements affect infrastructure, zoning, control interfaces and acoustic treatment. Waiting until the fit-out stage reduces our ability to properly design around them.

We do not believe audio needs to dominate the early design process, but it does need a place within it. Treating audio as part of a building’s operational infrastructure, rather than a final accessory, reduces remedial work, protects budgets and improves long-term performance. In our view, the most cost-effective system is often not the cheapest collection of equipment. It is the one the building was prepared to accommodate.
