Technology trends – smart home control

Automated electronic systems are an essential ingredient for the modern, intelligent home. TFA looks at the considerations at a refurbishment of a top-end Mayfair apartment.

A two-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of Mayfair has been completely renovated, reconfigured and redesigned by an impressive collaboration of companies, all project managed by expert integrators, EasyComp. The property incorporates not only stunning new décor, but also a comprehensive AV installation controlled via URC’s Complete Control system, supplied through distributor AWE.

The impressive apartment has been designed to showcase the alliance between property developers, MayCon, interior designers and joinery experts, KR Interiors and the AV integration/ project management skills of EasyComp. Therefore, it was imperative that every finest detail was catered for, with the AV being no exception.

“We specified a URC system on this project for two reasons,” explains Durgesh Sinh, director of EasyComp. “The first was that we needed a system in which we could completely redesign the GUI (Graphical User Interface) of the controllers, which spanned across a hard button URC MX-5000i remote control and several iPads. This was to not only make the interface match perfectly with the interior, but to also add a bespoke feel to the system as a whole, with real photographs of the apartment in different states, able to be pressed on screen to activate different control functions.

“The second was the ease of programming. With URC’s CCP software we know exactly what we’re doing and logic is really simple to program into the system. In addition, once the apartment has been sold, if anything was to ever go wrong, we can tap into the property’s system remotely, to troubleshoot offsite – saving us time and money.”

Three high-end Samsung F8000 screens ranging from 46 to 55-inches in diameter handle visual proceedings in both bedrooms and the living room. With sources such as Sky HD, Apple TV and Pioneer LX55 Blu-ray player running through the URC system, content can be enjoyed and controlled from anywhere in the apartment.

For an impressive audio solution in the main living space, a Denon AVR-X3000 was specified (also supplied by AWE). With an impressive 180W x 7 @ 6 ohms of music power, the AVR-X3000 is designed to entertain, with 3D compatibility and 4K video support, alongside a multitude of high-end audio processing technology from Dolby, DTS and Audyssey. The living room setup ensures everything from action movie nights to chilled listening sessions become an impressive spectacle.

URC’s Complete Control system can integrate and control all modern AV sources, either by RS-232 connection or IR blaster. Just one MRX-1 base station was used for the project, demonstrating that an extremely user-friendly, yet bespoke multi-room control system can be created with ease.
