Sony Medical 3D solutions stream optical surgery to ESCRS delegates

The 19th Winter Meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) performed four live cataract surgeries supported by Sony Medical solutions, with the operations shown live in 3D to delegates in the Hilton Hotel in Istanbul.

The surgeries were captured through the microscope, recorded and displayed with an HVO-3000MT 3D recorder and LMD-3251MT 3D monitor. The workflow was set up in partnership with Sony Medical dealer Promedak and then broadcast live via satellite and projected into the Congress Hall in 3D.

Sony Medical was chosen as the 3D surgical imaging equipment provider by Promedak to support the live 3D ophthalmology surgeries produced by the ESCRS.

The 3D workflow used to complete the four surgical procedures included; multiple surgical cameras, a 3D surgical monitor and 3D recorder used to capture all the content for future playback.

The cameras used included a MCC-3000MT 3-chip CMOS 3D camera system mounted on one operating microscope and a dual PMW-10MD 3-chip CMOS HD cameras mounted on the other operating microscope. Both camera systems captured live 3D images using an optical beam splitter so that the video images captured were exactly the same as the surgeon’s viewpoint.

The MCC-3000MT uses two compact camera head units combined with one Camera Control Unit to provide high quality 3D images. The PMW-10MD full HD 3-Chip CMOS camera also provides high quality images, even in low light conditions to ensure that the most detailed images were provided to the surgical team. The 32in LMD-3251MT monitor displayed the images from the 3D cameras and accurately reproduced what the surgeons were seeing with a realistic sense of depth.

Four successive cataract surgeries were performed and shown live in 3D at the ESCRS Winter Meeting in front of more than 800 participants attending the 3D live surgery session.

“The experience of organising this event and having a turnout of over 850 participants from an international community of professionals was incredibly rewarding,” said Andac Kaya from Promedak. “By using a Sony Medical Workflow, we were able to provide the conference with an easy-to-use solution for a complex procedure. Creating an end-to-end workflow with Sony Medical products is absolutely possible, not just for this procedure but for a broad range of other surgical applications as well.”

The recorded content can be used for teaching and training purposes by students or junior surgeons at a later date and enable them to view the procedures with the same perspective as the surgeons that performed them.

Tamkan Orscelik, medical channel account manager at Sony in Turkey said: “The event was a huge success and thanks to Mr. Andac Kaya from Promedak for his company’s great efforts. We have shown that Sony, together with our valuable Turkish dealer Promedak, were able to deliver a successful live end-to-end 3D surgery to a large audience.”
