The University of Bath, which is listed among the top 10 in the UK, installed six Sony VPL-FH500L and 51 VPL-FH31 projectors across all teaching spaces at the end of 2013.
The institution has already capitalised on a broad range of innovative technologies and multimedia communications tools that bring a fresh dimension and enrich the learning experience. However, reflecting on the growing importance of interactive teaching methods, the institution wanted to offer a multimedia visual teaching experience for its students. Recognising that it’s critical for academics to engage students with dynamic and powerful learning resources that are not only familiar to students, but can be accessed in a format they know best, the University of Bath set about creating an education environment with dynamic technology at its core.
The university’s AV team worked closely with Sony and systems integrator Reflex to design and implement a solution that would provide interactive teaching methods. The technology also had to be integrated into the wider IT infrastructure. The university had three central requirements for the installation: the guarantee of image quality, high brightness levels and low TCO.
Sony designed and implemented a bespoke solution for the University of Bath across all teaching spaces that featured six VPL-FH500L and 51VPL-FH31 projectors. The team succeeded in creating an immersive, informative university environment that brings a lecture to life.

The University of Bath selected the Sony solution because it believes the technology will allow it to standardise and improve its technology platform across its estate and all teaching spaces. The Sony products are said to provide the best blend of technology to meet those needs. Both the VPL-FH500L and VPL-FH31 are designed to fit seamlessly into any environment and offer exceptional brightness, zoom and throw range, coupled with wide lens shift range, meaning they can perform where other projectors would struggle – even in high ambient light, according to the compaany.
The University of Bath’s AV Manager, Rob Hyde, commented on why Sony’s projectors were selected: “It was important for the University to find a solution that not only reduced the TCO but also maintained a high performance, excellent image quality and compatibility with our existing technologies – and Sony’s product fits our needs best.”
