Saville AV creates ‘link space’ at UWS using UHD videowalls

The University of the West of Scotland (UWS) has been equipped with UHD videowalls by Saville AV to create a new technology-rich reception area at the entrance of the university.

Over the past year, UWS Paisley Campus has undergone significant upgrades to provide students, staff and visitors with a more contemporary and sustainable learning and working environment.

UWS has extended and refurbished the Brough Building, providing a larger reception area with social learning spaces, meeting spaces with interactive smartscreen technology, plus display zones and a café.

The area has been designed to be spacious and flexible enough to host events and exhibitions and there has been further investment in mobile charging and fast WiFi to encourage students to utilise this new link space to meet before and after lectures.

For this project Saville AV chose to design and build the videowall displays around the PIPview BlackBIRD videowall controller from Future Software, including foyer and reception displays.

The foyer display is capable of being rotated, on demand, between the main entrance door and the refectory. The reverse of this videowall features dual 65in interactive screens and a new Smartkapp IQ interactive whiteboard display that can connect to mobile devices using Bluetooth.

The reception videowall consists of nine NEC 46in screens in a 3×3 configuration, giving a native 5K display canvas. The main display area contains 32 NEC 46in screens arranged in an 8×4 configuration, giving a native display canvas of 15K.

All 16 inputs to the BlackBIRD controllers are 4K UHD with stereo audio that can be switched to the reception audio system. The majority of the inputs are from digital signage sources with additional inputs for laptops and videoconferencing equipment.

Jim O’Donnell, chief information officer at UWS commented: “The new display area is incredible, it has been a huge hit with our students and staff alike, the technology will allow students to share digital output bringing to life a key element of our Dream, Believe, Achieve focus.”
