Pub pilots LG 3D screen

It is widely believed that the 'killer app' that stands the best chance of bringing 3D to the masses is sports. A UK pub company is using an LG projector to find out whether 3D is the killer app that sells more beer.

The UK’s Punch Pub Company is expanding its use of 3D technology for its guests by using the unique CF3D from LG. The pilot installation is in the Raynes Park Tavern in south-west London, showing 3D cinema images on a 2.4 metre screen.

The LG CF3D projector puts the two projection systems necessary for cinema 3D – one for each eye – into a single unit and uses a single lens. That, says the company, makes it very simple to install and maintain, whilst ensuring the 3D screen is always perfectly aligned for stress-free viewing. The projection system uses circular polarisation, which means that inexpensive passive glasses can be used – ideal for the pub environment where they can be easily washed and reused.

The system, including the special silver screen and a Sky+ HD satellite decoder, was designed and installed by AV specialist supplier USL Audio Visual, a long-term partner of Punch Pub Company. Since the first installation in the Raynes Park Tavern the trial system has been extended to pubs in the north east of England.

“When it comes to gaining the full effect from 3D, size does matter,” said Punch general manager Matt Dunne. “This screen offers our guests the closest experience to actually being at the ground, giving that extra sense of drama and excitement.”

The CF3D projector from LG Electronics features a dual liquid crystal on silicon projection engine, delivering full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080. The 3D output of the projector is 1,250 ANSI lumens with a 7,000:1 contrast ratio. The single lens design ensures that the two light paths remain in alignment, reducing the need for onsite maintenance and delivering the reliability required for this type of application.
