The EU Commission has released a revised version of the proposed Ecodesign and energy labelling regulations.
The revised texts exempt a large number of significant tungsten lamps used in the entertainment, live performance and film industry, and provide several additional exemptions recognising the needs of the sectors.
Although the process so far has been successful and productive, there are still some important areas that need to be addressed, with the aim to continue providing the best experiences for film spectators and audiences of live events. As replacements on the market for available technical equipment is missing for certain special purpose lights used on stage and in film studios, the following demands remain important:
- Exemption from standby power mode and networked standby power mode
- Exemption for white light sources for specific needs
- Colour tuneable light sources and widen the definition of wavelength of green
- Lamp bases for exemption when used in professional entertainment lighting products
The European Entertainment Ecodesign Coalition – a European-wide group of associations working in the entertainment, live performance and film/TV sectors – continues to support the overall aims of the Ecodesign regulations and is currently working through the appropriate channels to request these changes. The regulatory committee will meet with the EU Commission on 17-20 December to decide on the final draft. The text is foreseen to be adopted in springtime and come into force from September 2021.
