Boatswain’s porcelain chandeliers light up Eurostar executive lounge.
Travellers setting off on the Eurostar from London’s St Pancras now enjoy a stunning international rail terminus matching any international airport. Perhaps the pinnacle of the design is the new Eurostar Business Executive Lounge, a place where frequent travellers between London and Paris are made to feel special. It is here that Land Design chose Boatswain’s porcelain chandeliers.
The space – set amid the Grade I listed railway station – had to comply with the scrutiny of English Heritage, while adapting to a contemporary look and feel in keeping with modern travel. Natural materials were favoured over synthetics and warm light was chosen to welcome and relax. The high ceilings and lighting fixtures provided an opportunity to make a dramatic statement.
“The oversize scale of the chandeliers fit and furnish the space perfectly,” says Jean Marc Barbaud, Eurostar’s design manager. “The candle-like effect and colour refers to a time when candles were still used widely and ceramic lampshades were frequently seen.”
The porcelain softens the stark chrome and steel of the furnishings and its texture complements the exposed brickwork of the original building. Porcelain light adapts to any interior but especially when a warm welcome is required.
