WMSA Europe launches to defend audio spectrum access

New advocacy alliance aims to safeguard spectrum access for audio Programme Making and Special Events (PMSE) users across Europe as regulatory pressure on UHF frequencies intensifies

WMSA Europe has been launched as a unified European platform to represent wireless microphone users and RF professionals, with a primary focus on protecting spectrum access for audio Programme Making and Special Events (PMSE).

The alliance addresses growing pressure on UHF spectrum – particularly the 600 MHz band – at a time when wireless audio usage is expanding while available spectrum continues to shrink. Wireless microphones and RF systems are used across broadcasting, live entertainment, touring productions, film and television production, and major events throughout Europe.

Founder members include RF professionals from France, Italy, Finland, Poland, Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom and Denmark, with further expansion under way. The organisation’s stated aims include defending audio PMSE access to spectrum resources, bringing together RF coordinators and sound engineers, promoting the next generation of RF specialists, and building a European advocacy and knowledge platform.

WMSA Europe says it intends to bring field expertise and technical evidence into dialogue with European decision-makers to promote efficient spectrum management, cross-border collaboration and long-term certainty for audio PMSE users. The network also aims to support cross-border coordination for touring productions and consistent professional standards across Europe.

The association is inviting RF coordinators, wireless audio professionals, equipment suppliers and live production organisations to join.
