Sphere Immersive Sound is set to debut at New York’s historic Radio City Music Hall this November with two significant new capabilities, marking the latest evolution of what’s been called the “world’s most advanced concert audio system” – and the first in a planned rollout across all MSG Family of Companies’ portfolio of venues.
Originally developed by Berlin-based audio specialist HOLOPLOT – now part of Sphere Entertainment Co, which also owns the Las Vegas Sphere and New York-based regional sports network chain MSG Networks – this new version of the system builds on the technologies first deployed for Sphere, and is designed to introduce new levels of acoustic precision.
Among the key upgrades is 3D Differential Beamforming. While traditional beamforming can see performance vary across different frequencies, this new approach allows for frequency-stable sound directivity by processing the differences between input signals, not just their combination. The intended result is more consistent and targeted sound placement across the entire venue.
Also new to Sphere Immersive Sound is Intelligent Audio System Synthesis, which enables the system to integrate seamlessly with third-party loudspeakers while preserving clarity and even coverage– even in acoustically complex areas of the venue.
At the heart of the Radio City Music Hall installation will be over 7,000 individually amplified loudspeaker drivers, said to deliver fully spatialised sound with exceptional accuracy regardless of where an audience member is seated.
The enhanced system will premiere during the New York venue’s 2025 Christmas Spectacular starring the Radio City Rockettes, ahead of being deployed for all concerts and live events from January 2026.
Josephine Vaccarello, executive VP live, for MSG Entertainment, said: “The introduction of Sphere Immersive Sound at Radio City is the next evolution in the legacy of this iconic space. It represents a significant investment in the Music Hall that will benefit every artist and every guest.”
Jessica Tuttle, executive VP productions, at MSG Entertainment, added: “As the Christmas Spectacular returns for its 92nd season, it continues to push the boundaries of theatrical innovationWith Sphere Immersive Sound, we can immerse audiences in Christmas like never before – the clarity and positioning of sound will be truly transformative.”
