Outline secures European patent for audio filter technology

Warped Finite Impulse Response (WFIR) filters distribute processing resolution according to how humans perceive pitch, concentrating accuracy at frequencies where the ear is most discriminating

Outline has been granted a European patent for its Warped Finite Impulse Response (WFIR) filter technology – a processing approach that mirrors the logarithmic nature of human hearing to maintain filtering accuracy across the full audio range, reducing the computing overhead of conventional FIR filters.

European Patent EP3763134, granted by the European Patent Office, protects the design developed by Outline’s engineering team. It follows an Italian patent awarded to the Brescia-based manufacturer. The technology is a core feature of the company’s Newton processor, an FPGA-based digital audio processing platform that operates as a brand-agnostic solution compatible with loudspeakers from multiple manufacturers.

Beyond full-range resolution, Outline says WFIR filters allow for equalisation accuracy and offer what the company describes as a 10x resolution factor at mid-to-low frequencies. The technology is also said to be free of the latency issues that can affect conventional FIR processing.

Newton was introduced in 2017 and has since been adopted across large-scale live sound and fixed installation applications.
