3D projection mapping install lights up city landmarks

FACE has completed a 3D projection mapping installation in the city of Bokrijk, Belgium featuring Digital Projection projectors and a d3 Technologies media server.

FACE (Foundation for Audiovisual Commerce & Engineering) has completed a 3D projection mapping installation in the city of Bokrijk, Belgium featuring Digital Projection projectors and a d3 Technologies media server. The installation was commissioned by Aromazz NV and had its debut at the Day of Entrepreneurs, hosted by Unizo Limburg.

Painting with Light designed the projection mapping, with FACE installing two Digital Projection Titan Quad 20,000 ANSI lumen projectors, which light up building facades in the city through the glass wall of event venue Hangar 58.

The content is managed by a d3 Technologies 4x2Pro media server.

Geert Custers, product specialist at FACE explained: “We took a 3D scan of the facades which were converted in millions of individual points. These single dots are then converted into a large UV mapping. The d3 software generates a projection specifically for this UV map. What comes out of the projectors is an image that fits the buildings shapes exactly.”

DVI extenders were used to convert the video output to fibre and the communication between the servers and projectors also runs on a fibre network. In addition, the entire setup can be programmed and controlled from a tablet.

The control software can handle a variety of formats, which allows event organisers to customise content to suit their event ranging from static company logos to a complete custom-made projection show.
