Multi-room music over IP with Revox’s Voxnet

Voxnet is a new Ethernet-based audio system for use in hotel rooms or in conference and meeting rooms, as well as for private use. According to developer Revox, the Voxnet system is able to deliver synchronised, CD-quality music to several rooms.

Thanks to the creation of individual user profiles, the system knows ‘who last listened to what’. Corresponding station favourites and playlists can be called up at the press of a smartphone button or tablet app, a wall-mounted operating panel or through a traditional infrared remote control.

The central communication unit is the Voxnet server, installed on a Synology NAS. All services and licences run on the server, which can also be used as a music archive

Audio streaming services such as Spotify or Deezer, as well as products such as an Apple TV or Chromecast, can be integrated by the user into the Voxnet system. Additionally, Revox says it can implement new and future technologies and services into the system at any time.

If video content from the iPad via Apple TV or from the Android tablet via Chromecast is being played on the television, Voxnet registers the fact and starts to play the corresponding sound, without any further operator steps being needed. The sound from the television can be heard in several rooms at the same time.

A 1Gbps LAN connects the Voxnet server to the switch and from there to the individual rooms and components. A Voxnet 219 amplifier is then installed in each room, with 2 x 50W output performance. Through the integrated DSP, the output signal can be adjusted to the Revox speakers and their positioning in the room, to achieve the best possible sound experience, says the company.
