Expert panel to discuss how museums are going digital

As a curtain-raiser to the Opening Day Keynote, an expert panel will discuss Museums in the Age of the Metaverse on Tuesday 10 May at 17:00.

Moderating the panel will be Miquel Molina Muntané, a Deputy Editor at the newspaper La Vanguardia with a particular interest in cities and culture. Speaking will be Gary Gautier, Director General at Casa Batlló; an important Barcelona building designed by Gaudí, which has hosted digital artworks and projections created by Opening Day Keynote speaker Refik Anadol.

Joining him on the panel will be Hamza El Azhar, CEO and co-founder of Exhibition Hub, which has produced 90 exhibitions across the world, more recently specialising in immersive experiences, including digital art exhibitions that animate the works of artists such as Van Gogh and Monet. Exhibition Hub is also working with ISE on the Immersive Art Experience in Hall 2.

Also taking part will be Lieven Bertels, who recently joined Barco as Segment Marketing Manager Immersive Experiences. Prior to this, he spent over 20 years as a creative and executive director in various media and cultural organisations in Europe, Australia and the US.

The panel will discuss digital transformation within the museums and historic buildings sector and the challenges that it raises for venues and technologists alike. What can we expect next, both in terms of new technologies and how they are applied? What new experiences can audiences expect? And how might museums and heritage sites reinvent themselves in the metaverse?

Museums in the Age of the Metaverse takes place from 17:00-17:50 on Tuesday 10 May in the VIOSO Projection Dome in Hall 5. Entry is free and registration is not required.
