Nominees for Retail/DOOH Project of the Year

Absen: Istanbul Airport Duty Free Area

The airport’s newly constructed Unifree Duty-Free area is the biggest duty-free area in the world. After passport control, passengers enter the Duty-Free zone and are greeted by 1,000sqm of Absen LED video screens.

The big visual impact of this LED installation is created by two huge ceiling-mounted video screens (each measuring 120sqm) that have been installed in such a way that passengers cannot miss passing one on route to a flight as they are situated in the east and west sides of the airport. A gigantic 300 metres long, curved LED wall has been installed, following the walkway of all passengers along the duty-free stores. Finally, 240 LCD screens have been deployed within the stores for signage applications and 65’’ LCD touch wayfinding kiosks.

Local integrator Astel led the integration of the solution with support from LED manufacturer Absen and Sistem9 who provided central management and the signage software. The project took around 10 months to complete.

Calibre AiO LEDFusion Displays: Ocean Outdoor London HQ

Ocean Outdoor UK and Ocean Group recently moved into a new flagship facility which will be the companies’ new London headquarters in Soho. Concurrently, the companies’ West End office underwent a major refurbishment – which included the deployment of a number of displays throughout the offices.

Two of these new displays were Calibre’s AiO LEDFusion A130 screens. One is deployed as the main presentation screen at the centre of Ocean’s new boardroom and the second is used primarily by the sales team and for internal messaging. Both screens are integrated with the internal office AV equipment with the capability to change messaging in real time reflecting how Ocean Outdoor operates the display of their client’s advertising at all of their sites.

John Kilfeather, operations and technology director at Ocean Outdoor, said, “Our recent move provided us with an obvious opportunity to assess what was available. Calibre’s AiO displays impressed us with not only their size, but also their outstanding image quality, their functionality and flexibility and their ease of deployment. They now enhance our every day operations.”

Philips Professional Displays: nhow Amsterdam RAI hotel

Opened January 2020, the nhow Amsterdam RAI is a new 25 floor, 650 room hotel located in the heart of the city’s bustling business district and immediately next door to the RAI Convention Centre – the now former home of ISE.

The brief from nhow was to offer the most extensive, personalised, and immersive high-quality entertainment experience in each room. All TVs needed to be connected and the hotel required a remote back-end control and management solution.

Philips Professional Display Solutions’ range of Ambilight, 4K, Android-powered Signature TV range was selected. Ranging between 55” and 65”, each display provides 4K UHD picture quality, plus Philips Ambilight LED technology (illuminating the wall to reflect what’s being displayed).

Samsung KX: Coal Drops Yard, London

Samsung KX is a 20,000-square-foot brand showcase located at London’s Coal Drops Yard. Samsung’s objective was to showcase the full Samsung ecosystem, how multiple devices and services come together to deliver a complete and harmonised experience.

Enabling an experience-driven environment relies upon benchmark AV and IT infrastructure, which was designed and integrated by Snelling Business Systems (SBS). The AV infrastructure supports system flexibility for retail mode, film screenings, live music gigs, talks and lectures, esports and gaming, VR racing, graffiti wall, fashion shows, yoga studio, and more.

The installation quality was first class,” said Kevin Luckhurst, associate at Hoare Lea Intelligent Buildings. “SBS provided an exceptional commissioning process, with any changes, tweaks and snags resolved with efficiency. They continue to provide operational support for the venue..”

Videotree/Ian Rees/Harrods

Harrods Beauty Hall has invested in Magic Mirror experience from UK screen and TV technology specialist Videotree as part of a relaunch. Due to be finished in 2020, this major £200m refurbishment will be completed in three phases and consists of the new Beauty Hall which will eventually cover 90,000 sq ft.

Magic Mirrors digitally map facial features so that customers can try different products such as lipsticks, foundations, blushers, all without ever putting them on their skin. All the mirrors have been custom designed using the very latest in vanishing mirror technology and the project is unique in the UK.

The Magic Mirror experience was designed and created in the UK using the latest 3D design and 3D printing and machining. “This project has taken over 18 months to complete with over 50 individual parts that had to be custom designed and machined to create what you see now,” said Ian Rees, CEO of Videotree.
