Integrator Whitwam AVI has completed a comprehensive upgrade of the AV, broadcast, IT and security infrastructure at Saint Michael’s Abbey in Farnborough, UK. The installation includes a multi-zone audio system featuring Bose MA12 modular column array loudspeakers, a Sennheiser MobileConnect system, five Panasonic AW-UE50 PTZ cameras, and a flexible broadcast and streaming setup based on Blackmagic Design hardware and the Epiphan Pearl Nano encoder.
Designed to support both live worship and streaming of events, the project also incorporates CCTV, networking and accessibility solutions. The abbey is now able to stream its Sunday Mass to audiences across North America, Asia and Australia.
Originally conceived as an audio system refresh, the project scope expanded to support the abbey’s full restoration programme. Working within the limitations of a historic site, Whitwam AVI designed custom brackets and RAL-matched enclosures to discreetly integrate loudspeakers and cameras. The building’s structural constraints also required multiple distributed equipment racks, some within IP-rated enclosures for basement and crypt locations, all connected using fibre and twisted pair extenders.
Video coverage of services is handled by the Panasonic PTZ cameras positioned at the high altar, side crossings and nave, along with a portable unit for special events. A 10in Lilliput monitor improves visibility for the organist, while the broadcast system enables services to be live-streamed via platforms such as YouTube. Accessibility is enhanced with a Sennheiser MobileConnect system, allowing visitors with hearing impairments to stream live audio to personal devices.
The broadcast feed is also integrated into the Abbey’s CCTV network using Antrica video encoders, enabling monitoring through a HikVision NVR and visualised via a Lightware VINX networked video distribution system. A 32in NEC Large Format Display provides multi-view access in locations such as the Abbot’s office.
Father Abbot, of Saint Michael’s, said: “We wanted to connect with our community through broadcasting our services. To enable those far away to participate, for intellectual access, and to reach those who might be looking for a vocation within a monastery.”
Ray Clarke, operations and engineering manager at Whitwam AVI, added: “It was important to deliver a system that will serve the abbey well into the future. Having the network infrastructure in place now will allow the system to grow as the needs of the monastery evolve.”
Alan Head, UK broadcast sales manager, Panasonic, commented: “We are pleased to see our technologies installed in spaces as unique as Saint Michael’s Abbey. The team at Whitwam AVI have taken great care to integrate five of our AW-UE50 cameras seamlessly with the surrounding architecture.”
