Ultimate Visual Solutions’ (UVS) Lucidity video wall platform and Sharp/NEC displays are at the heart of a major control room upgrade at one of National Highways’ seven regional operations centres, which together monitor motorway and major road traffic across England around the clock.
The Yorkshire and North East ROC in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, which is responsible for real-time traffic management across a significant stretch of the national road network, now features three Sharp/NEC 2×4 LCD video walls driven by a Lucidity video wall server, alongside a 98in Sharp/NEC MultiSync display in the centre’s conference and coordination room. System integration was carried out by Electrosonic.
Operators use the displays to monitor live traffic feeds, respond to incidents and manage roadside signals, speed restrictions and congestion during peak periods, adverse weather and maintenance works. Audible and visual alarms alert staff to developing situations, with the ability to zoom into specific locations as incidents unfold.
Central to the project was the development of custom API translation tools by UVS to meet National Highways’ operational requirements – functionality the company says was not available off the shelf from other manufacturers. These tools enabled a smooth migration from the legacy platform to the new Lucidity framework, according to UVS.
Phill Whitehead, technical director at UVS, said: “A collaborative approach helped simplify a seamless migration from the existing solution to the new Lucidity framework. These developments help facilitate strict requirements which no other manufacturer on the market was able to provide straight out of the box.”
Matt Cruse, account manager at Electrosonic, added: “The close collaboration between Electrosonic, Sharp/NEC, UVS, architects and building contractors enabled a seamless, consistent approach to the project.”
