Stage One, the company behind many spectacular features of opening and closing ceremonies at the London Olympics, has won the 2013 Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the category of Continuous Innovation. Winners of the 2013 Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the category of Continuous Innovation, Stage One stood on the World stage at last summer’s London Olympics, providing many of the features of the Opening and Closing ceremonies. Thomas Heatherwick’s stunning Olympic cauldron; the spectacular flight of five enormous Olympic rings into the air above the stadium; and the many monstrous iron contraptions that magically emerged to form the Industrial Revolution tableau – all were produced by this uniquely skilled company. For many architects, designers and creative thinkers that inhabit the world of entertainment and special events, there are few places to turn when you dream the unimaginable. Stage One has been realising the ideas of Heatherwick and his contemporaries for over 20 years. Touring theatre; world class sporting events; major TV extravaganzas; and many Olympic ceremonies – all have received the Stage One touch. This Queen’s Award recognises the Continuous Innovation inherent throughout the last decade of the company’s activities. “Innovation is about taking the known and applying those certainties to the unknown,” said MD Mark Johnson. “Thomas Heatherwick coined the phrase ‘James Bond’s gadget workshop’ when talking of the company’s abilities. The unfettered imaginings of a man like Thomas Heatherwick requires a unique set of skills to address them. Ideas are nothing without realisation and winning this prestigious award is recognition for exactly that; the realisation of dreams.” Approximately 150 Queen’s Awards have been announced this year for outstanding business achievement in the fields of International Trade, Innovation and Sustainable development. Winners of the Queen’s Award can expect an invitation to attend a special reception at Buckingham Palace. The Awards are made annually by HM The Queen, and are only given for the highest levels of excellence demonstrated in each category. www.stageone.co.uk
