Stage Electrics supplies LED lighting solution for Theatre Royal, Drury Lane

Lighting specialist Stage Electrics was handed the role as LED lighting supplier for the upgrade of the West End's Theatre Royal.

Lighting specialists Stage Electrics has taken the lead as systems integrator, supplying a full architectural LED lighting solution into Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.

First built in 1812 in the heart of London’s West End and originally known as “Drury Lane”, the theatre, which stands on the oldest theatre site in London, has recently completed a £4million restoration project.

Stage Electrics’ worked in collaboration with architectural lighting designer Norman Bragg and Theatre Royal’s Steve McAndrew to find the right lighting solutions for this iconic venue.

It was decided control of all lighting would be via Zero 88 Chilli dimmer racks with a Stick KE1 touch screen control interface and DMX – which was distributed around the space via Swisson DMX merger and splitter units.

“The scope of the project was to provide discreet lighting solutions for all the public areas inside this impressive location,” commented business development manager Paul Roughton. “The work is a faithful recreation of the original regency style art décor, including The Rotunda, both the King and Prince’s royal staircases and the Grand Saloon Bar. The style of lighting chosen was very specific, to keep the feel and look as theatrical as possible.”

For the rotunda, discreet focusable lighting was chosen with shuttering to light the artwork that had been hanging in the theatre for many years. White Philips Selecon Auerol beamshapers were installed with added UV glass to preserve the paintings from damage.

Pulsar LED lighting units were installed to light The Grand Saloon Bar within the theatre. For up-lighting, Pulsar ChromaPoint In-Ground fittings were ensconced into the wooden floor and Pulsar ChromaMR16 RGB fittings were recessed at the top of the bar to down-light from the bar to the floor. IP rated (for added protection) Pulsar Chromazones were installed in the ceiling void to control the system.

Selections of Rosco LED Miro Cubes were deployed because of their compact size and high light output. Mounted above the doorway leading into the Grand Saloon Bar and positioned to accentuate the gold motif in the ceiling top.

“Working with Stage Electrics on this project made the process so enjoyable. Paul and his team came up with a lot of great solutions to achieve Norman’s creative design. We felt very safe in their hands, the end result was very high quality and to a high standard. We are very pleased with our refreshed venue,’ finished McAndrew.
