The Gold Souk is based around a 75ft diameter domed super high-resolution projection screen raised 40ft above the floor. The design of the area presented a number of acoustical challenges, which were met with a custom system incorporating EAW AX Series loudspeakers and some unique architectural solutions.
The system design by Indianapolis-based Bowen Technovation entails the flying of the units behind the perforated aluminium projection dome, completely out of sight. The specification includes eight custom EAW AX Series BWN 2x15in enclosures, two EAW AX366 Arrayable Install Loudspeakers and eight EAW SB150z Compact Subwoofers. The 5.1-capable system is powered by QSC DCA amplifiers, with processing from networked BSS Soundweb London devices.
Achieving high-impact SPL with great pattern control and instrumental clarity were among the key objectives of the design process, which saw Bowen Technovation collaborate with product specialists from EAW.
Kenton Forsythe, EAW co-founder and executive engineer, told II: “EAW worked closely with Jeff Bowen and Bowen Technovation to develop a more powerful variant of the standard AX system. The resulting BWN 396 system used dual high-power (4in coil) 15in woofers in a somewhat larger (39in) vented cabinet for more extended LF response (to 40Hz) and increased output capability. Such work is representative of EAW’s ongoing Build to Order development capabilities.”
