Systems integrator Smartcomm won Best Multi-Dwelling Installation at the 2009 CEDIA Awards for a stunning apartment complex in Berkshire, England. It features the first UK application of a control and automation solution for luxury apartments.

Charters, a former stately home near Ascot now transformed into 34 apartments, is a rare Art Deco architectural gem set amidst 20 acres of landscaped gardens.

The high-tech security includes an AV entry system. The concierge is connected automatically to this system, so guests and unexpected visitors are never left unattended.

In addition, residents have their own security cards. CCTV surveillance and a car number plate recognition system are also in place enhancing the site security.

The VertilincLive system Smartcomm installed performs the tasks that a butler might – but through automation and a stylish Crestron touchpanel. This is the first installation of the system in the UK.

Steve Worrell, MD of Smartcomm, said: ìHome automation is not about flat screen TVs and automatically opening garage doors ñ itís much simpler than that. If you look beyond the media hype what youíre really buying into is lifestyle convenience ñ and at Charters that can be had in spades. The residents have a bewildering array of features at their fingertips and when you combine this with the superb concierge facilities on-site they have the world at their fingertips, almost literally.î

Smartcomm has designed the system to allow Charters residents to access a huge range of lifestyle features at the touch-of-a-button. For example, residents can reserve a table at a local restaurant, order a takeaway, request a car from the valet or organise maintenance services.

Residents can also use this technology to automatically reserve tennis courts, racquetball courts, spa sessions and book golf tee times – all from their Crestron touchpanel.

Drawing rooms are fitted with a home cinema system with a mirror plasma screen and surround sound speaker system controlled via a wireless Crestron TPMC-8x touch panel. There is a choice of LCD or plasma screens in the kitchen, master and second bedrooms, while waterproof aqua TV screens feature in the master en-suite bathrooms.

Alongside this, HD-Ready audio and video distribution systems allow residents to view, listen and control different sources such as Sky, DVD, music and radio in different rooms. A lighting control scheme offers the ability to set the ambience and mood for all times of the day and night.
